Make Your Own Play Dough
Play Dough is fun for kids at any age. We have several recipes to
make different types of Play Dough. Have the kids help make the Play
Dough. This is a great way for them to learn about the abbreviations
and how to prepare a recipe and following directions. The ingredients
for these recipes can be found at your local grocery store.
- c. = cup
- tbsp. = tablespoon
- tsp. = teaspoon
Super Play Dough
Ingredients:
- 4 c. flour
- 1 ½ c. salt
- 3 c. water
- 1 ½ tbsp. alum (you can find this at your local
grocery store with the spices)
- ½ tbsp. salad oil
- food coloring
- 2 tsp. cream of tartar
Directions:
- Mix together in a large bowl.
- Bring water to a rolling boil.
- Add the water to dry ingredients, continuously stirring.
- Add oil and knead dough on a flat and floured surface
until the dough is smooth and not sticky.
- Store in airtight container. This will keep for a long time.
Activity Extension:
Make several different colors of this dough and let the children
create many different things. Give them cookie cutters, stamps,
and a rolling pin and let their imaginations do the rest.
Modeling Dough
(Yield: 1 cup)
Ingredients:
- ¾ c. flour
- ½ c. salt
- 1 ½ tsp. powdered alum
- 1 ½ tsp. vegetable oil
- ½ c. boiling water
- food coloring
Directions:
- Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl.
- Mix the oil and water together, stirring quickly.
- Add the oil and water to the dry ingredients and stir
until blended.
- Add the food coloring until desired color is established.
- Store in airtight container.
Activity Extension:

Play Clay
Ingredients:
- ½ c. salt
- ½ c. hot water
- ½ c. cold water
- ½ c. cornstarch
Directions:
- Mix the salt into the hot water and bring to a boil.
- Stir the cornstarch into the cold water.
- Combine the cornstarch mixture to the salt mixture and stir
rapidly to avoid lumping.
- Cook the mixture over low heat, stirring constantly until it
thickens.
- Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool.
- Knead the mixture until soft and pliable.
Activity Extension:
This dough is excellent for making Christmas ornaments. Roll out the
dough and use Christmas cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Make sure
to leave a hole for hanging the ornament. Let the dough dry overnight
or put in the oven at 200 degrees for one hour. Let cool and then
paint.
